Two circlips are used per piston — one on each side of the wrist pin — snapping into machined grooves in the piston boss to prevent the wrist pin from migrating laterally and contacting the cylinder wall. A deformed, fatigued, or incorrectly seated circlip that lets go at engine RPM causes catastrophic cylinder and piston damage. Always use new circlips at every piston installation — they are single-use items.
